Glasgow is the best place in the world to view the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

Although a devastating fire at Glasgow School of Art has left one of Mackintoshes’ masterpieces in ruins, there are still many famous Mackintosh attractions in Glasgow you can see and visit.

We visited the Mackintosh House.

Mackintosh House

From 1906 to 1914 Charles Rennie Mackintosh used to live at 78 Southpark Avenue (originally 6 Florentine Terrace) with his wife, Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh.

Their house was elaborately furnished with Mackintoshes’ own designs. Unfortunately, the house was demolished in the early 1960s.

Luckily, the original fixtures were preserved and reassembled, complete with the contents, as an integral part of the Hunterian Art Gallery.

The interiors have been furnished with the Mackintoshes’ own furniture and decorated as closely as possible to the original.

These beautiful rooms provide rare insight into the Mackintoshes’ home life.

Admission to the Mackintosh House is by a combination of guided tours and free flow self-guided visits.

If you are not able to visit this amazing place, then you can enjoy a virtual tour and explore the Mackintosh House at your own pace.

Walking

Three different city walks will introduce you to Mackintosh’s architectural heritage and the wider architectural riches of Glasgow. They can easily be combined.

The Glasgow Style and Modernity walk begins at Central Station. It will lead you along some of the remarkable architecture in Glasgow such as Mackintosh at the Willow.

The Second City walk will examine some of the best examples of Victorian and Edwardian commercial architecture in the city.

And finally, the West End walk explores the residential suburbs to the west of the city centre.

From Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum you will walk via the University to Great Western Terrace.
