Framlingham is a picturesque market town in Suffolk and at the top of Church Street you will find the famous Framlingham Castle.

The castle dates from the 12th-century and it became the seat of the dukes of Norfolk.

Nowadays it is little more then a shell inside, but the curtain wall has survived.

When you visit the castle you will be able to walk on the 10,5 metres high curtain wall and enjoy the breath-taking views of the Suffolk landscape.

Ed Sheeran’s fans will most definitely recognize this Castle on the Hill!

We have visited Framlingham many times, especially in wintertime when it is less crowded.

It’s such a lovely market town with quaint shops and houses.

Walking

You don’t have to buy a ticket to explore the grounds around the castle.

You can get a superb view of the castle from the outside by following the footpaths that lead around the moat.

Go down to and around the lake below, where you can see across the valley to Framlingham College.

Put on your walking shoes and explore the Framlingham Mere Nature Reserve.

A stroll around the beautiful Mere is easily combined with a visit to the bustling market town and the castle.

Or you could try one of the East Suffolk Lines walks.

Most of the walks are station-to-station connecting Lowestoft, Ipswich and Felixstowe.

You can easily take one or more of the walks and take the train back, and vice versa.

We enjoyed a 7-mile walk from Wickham Market station to Framlingham.

Framlingham is situated just outside Suffolk Coast & Heaths AONB.

This area has some of the most appealing landscapes for walking.

From easy strolls to keen hiking, and are a fantastic way to really get to know East Suffolk.
