The Talbot Inn

After visiting Nunney Castle, we stopped at the lovely, dreamy village of Mells on our way to Frome.
Mells was definitely worth a brief diversion. Not only because of its impressive 15th century St Andrew church standing at the end of a medieval row of cottages.
But also because we felled a bit peckish. So we stopped in Mells to have a lunch at the Talbot Inn. What a treat!
We have visited the Talbot Inn ever since and it never disappoints.
This wonderful coaching house is full of character, serving delicious hearty meals. It is a perfect environment for long lunches and sumptuous suppers.
They also offer eight traditional-style rooms, sitting comfortably around the pub’s cobbled courtyard.
We cannot use our own photos for this post because we need to consider the privacy of the other guests who accidentally ended up on the photos. Therefore we used the photos of the Talbot Inn website.
Walking
The countryside around Mells is stunning. Set in one of the remote areas of Somerset, there are many great walks to choose from.
Take a walk along the Mells River Valley to the disused Fussells Iron Works.
Explore the ivy clad ruins and walk on along the densely wooded valley through Great Elm and on to Frome where it becomes the Frome river. A delightful 1-2-hour walk.
Or join the Colliers Way
This recreational path extends 23 miles, starting just outside of Bath and extending to the Limpley Stoke Valley in the north and the Frome Valley in the south.
This picturesque way follows the route of the old Somersetshire Coal Canal, old railway lines and quiet lanes, and is intended for cyclists, walkers, wheelchair-users, and horse-riders.
Or take on a bigger challenge and follow the Mendip Way which passes Mells on it way to Frome.
This amazing 50-mile long-distance trail takes in all the special qualities of the Mendip Hills. The West and East Mendip Way connect Weston-super-Mare, via Cheddar and Wells to Frome. A perfect 3-day walk.
The West Mendip Way is largely in the Mendip Hills AONB and starts near the Bristol Channel at Uphill and climbs the Mendip Hills escarpment onto the Mendip plateau and across the top of Cheddar Gorge and down to Wells.
The East Mendip Way continues from Wells to Frome passing to the north of Shepton Mallet and Mells.
