There is off course much to see and do in the marvellous World Heritage City of Bath.

But we do enjoy a good walk and the Bath Skyline Walk is our favourite!

This 6-mile trail on the heights to the east of the city is laid out by the National Trust.

The waymarked circular route takes in woods, meadows and two of Bath’s sights – Prior Park and the American Museum – as well as Sham Castle.

Sham Castle isn’t a real castle. It is an architectural folly erected in 1762 by a local entrepreneur Ralph Allen. Allen supposedly wanted to improve the view from his own townhouse.

We have walked this trail many times and it always seems to impress.

The vistas of the towers, spires and crescents of Bath from here and the various other points on the route are just sublime.

The easiest access points to the Skyline walk are Cleveland Walk and Bathwick (near the Holburne museum). Or, higher up, from the University of Bath campus at Claverton.

The Cotswolds Way

If you are up for a long-distance walk, then the Cotswolds Way will not disappoint.

The Cotswold Way is a 102-mile long National Trail, running between the market town of Chipping Campden and the city of Bath (Somerset).

The breath-taking, long-distance views are one of the many things that attract people to the trail.

Look towards Wales and you will see the Severn Estuary and Severn bridges, the Forest of Dean, the Welsh hills of Monmouthshire and the Black Mountains.

Further north on the path, above Cheltenham, are old quarries containing rock features such as the Devil’s Chimney at Leckhampton.

Along the way you can explore classic Cotswold villages such as Stanton, Stanway and Broadway.

You can also opt for the last section of the Cotswolds Way, a 6-mile circular walk into Bath.
