On the northern edge of the North Pennines AONB, the River Allen flows slowly through a steep-sided wooded gorge on its way to the River Tyne.

Along this part of the river valley, you will find a precious woodland, Allen Banks.

It is ancient in place and absolutely enchanting.

Forests of beech and oak cascade down this steep-sided valley, while the sounds of wildlife fill the air.

Much of this landscape was created by its Victorian landowner Susan Davidson of Ridley Hall.

Because of her passion for nature and wildlife, Allen Banks has become a fantastic home for flora, fauna and fungi.

Walking

We visited Allen Banks on a rainy afternoon in summertime and we had the place to ourselves.

With its deep gorge, this site provides the perfect setting for an afternoon walk.

Start from the National Trust car park at Ridley Hall. This was once the walled kitchen garden for the house.

From here, the riverside path heads south on the western bank of the River Allen.

We followed a 4,5-mile circular trail all the way up to Staward Peel.

It is a steep climb through the wooded Staward Gorge Valley, but the views over the canopy from the pele tower at the top are magnificent.

If you like a challenge, then you should follow the John Martin Heritage Trail.

This 11-mile circular walk starts at Haydon Bridge and follows the River Tyne westward.

It enters Allen Banks Nature Reserve and follows the River Allen southward to Staward Peel and then back again to Haydon Bridge.

John Martin was a local Victorian artist who found inspiration in this gorge. He walked alone “seeking all that was grand, romantic and beautiful”.

And that is exactly what you will find in this majestic part of Northumberland.

Or you can walk in the footsteps of the legendary tea seller Isaac Holden.

Discover hidden valleys and cross wild moors with stunning views across Cumbria on the Isaac’s Tea Trail.

This 36-mile circular trail links Alston, England’s highest town, with Allendale.

The route includes historic Allendale Common with a slice of Alston Moor over moorlands and down to picturesque villages hugging the valleys.

We enjoyed the section from Ninebanks to Allendale Town.

This easy 9,5-mile linear route takes in the West Allen and East Allen valley.
