The Old Chapel

A couple of seasons ago we stayed at the Old Chapel in the village of Gunthorpe near Holt, not far from the Norfolk Coast AONB.

This delightful old chapel has been concerted into a stylish and luxurious holiday cottage.

We just loved the location and the fact that it felt quit remote even though this cottage is situated in a small village.

The open-plan living works very well. It combines a modern fitted kitchen with a dining area and cosy seating area around a wood burner.

Upstairs are two big bedrooms and two bathrooms.

The best thing is the pretty parterre garden, with open rural views beyond. Just open those double French doors and step out onto the terrace!

For us it was a perfect rural escape! We loved staying here.

Local area

The village of Gunthorpe is a perfect base from which to explore both rural and coastal North Norfolk at any time of the year.

The market towns of Fakenham and Holt are both within easy reach. Here you will find excellent bakeries, butchers and greengrocers.

Head towards Salthouse Marshes. It is superb birding territory and ideal for walking and enjoying wildlife.

Or visit National Trust’s Sheringham Park. With 1000 acres of parkland and woodland to explore, it is an outdoor playground for all ages.

Last but not least. Do visit Letheringsett Watermill!

Letheringsett Watermill is the last remaining watermill in Norfolk to produce flour.

Walking

We enjoyed the 5-mile Active Trail. This trail follows the popular Sheringham Parkrun route, passing through varying woodland and parkland habitats, taking in stunning coastal views.

Just a couple of miles from the Old Chapel you will find Holt Country Park, set in 100 acres of mixed woodland.

There are many waymarked trails through this tranquil woodland.

You can easily walk through Holt Country Park towards the village of Baconsthorpe and visit Baconsthorpe Castle.

This 8-mile circular will take you along sandy roads and rolling fields through typical Norfolk countryside.

From Baconsthorpe Castle you can extend your walk further towards Bodham.

A gentle 5-mile circular walk takes you through open and gently rolling farmland, which is sprinkled with mature, semi-natural woodland such as Baconsthorpe Wood.
