The Gunton Arms is a traditional pub with bedrooms near Cromer in the beautiful North Norfolk Coast AONB.

The moment you step into the Gunton Arms, you can sense the unique atmosphere of the place. It is laid back but still very sophisticated.

Due to the pool table and the bar, it feels informal but once you step into the Elk Room the vibe changes. In a particularly good way!

In the Elk Room venison from the deer park and beef from the local herd at Blickling are cooked over a large open fire by the chef Stuart Tattersall.

Lighter snacks are available and there is plenty on the menu for vegetarians.

Deer Park

The Gunton Arms is situated in a one-thousand-acre deer park which surrounds Gunton Hall.

It was created in the early 18th Century by the Harbord family and was comparable in scale to Holkham and Houghton.

In the 20th Century the park declined into ruin, buildings were sold, the land ploughed up and the woods cut down.

Fortunately, it was rescued in 1982.

Walking

Stretch your legs first and then go to the Gunton Arms for a scrumptious lunch, like we did.

Take a 4,5-mile circular walk that starts at Gunton Station. This is a Bittern Line Walk.

The Bittern Line railway heads north from Norwich passing through The Broads and on its way to the dramatic north Norfolk coast it passes Gunton Station.

Or head for Cromer. The Gunton Arms is situated just 4 miles from the sea and a short drive from Cromer and Holt.

Cromer is part of the national ‘Walkers are Welcome’ towns network and therefore a gateway to a variety of trails and paths.

Long-distance paths

We enjoyed the first leg of the Weavers’ Way from Cromer to Blickling Hall.

This 17-mile linear walk passes through the Felbrigg Hall estate and along lanes through farmland to reach Aldborough.

Then it follows the valley of Scarrow Beck through Erpingham and on to Blickling Estate.

Or walk the first stretch of the Paston Way from Cromer to Mundesley

This 11-mile linear trail follows the beach between Cromer and Overstrand.

It then leads inland to Southrepps from where it meanders through rolling farmland.

Passing the village of Trimingham before returning to the coast at Mundesley.
