Norfolk is probably most famous for the man-made Broads.

Norfolk Broads National Park comprises 125 miles of navigable lock-free waterways set in beautiful countryside and dotted with charming and picturesque towns and villages.

With unique wildlife, 28 Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and 9 National Nature Reserves within its boundary, the Broads offers visitors an extraordinary experience.

The Broads can be split into two parts, the Northern Broads and the Southern Broads.

The Northern Broads are clustered around the rivers Bure, Ant and Thurne – the very heart of Norfolk Broadland.

The Southern Broads lies further south, east of Norwich along the River Yare, stretching down into Suffolk and the Waveney Valley.

Exploring the Broads

The best way to discover the Broads is by boat. Be aware that much of the Broads cannot be reached by road!

It is therefore not a surprise that the busiest part of the Broads is around the boat hire centres – Wroxham, Hoveton and Ranworth Broads.

Far quieter are Barton, Cockshoot and Hickling Broads, the latter two having boarded walkways and water trails.

Walking

Hoveton Great Broad Nature Trail is regarded as one of the best little trails on the Broads. Be aware that this trail is only accessible by boat.

Park for free in the Salhouse Broad car park and follow the path down to the Broad. At the bottom of the path, turn left and look for the Salhouse Ferry.

Or go for a scenic 6-mile circular walk around Ludham. This walk takes you through the Ant valley which forms part of the Bure Valley Living Landscape. You will enjoy breathe-taking views, mills, and quaint villages.

Marriot’s Way

Marriott’s Way is perfect for cycling and walking. At 26 miles this is one of the longest off-road routes in the country.

This tranquil trail winds its way through glorious Norfolk countryside and picturesque villages.

It follows the track-bed of the decommissioned railway line that linked Aylsham and Reepham with Norwich.
