Horsey Mere
Horsey Mere is part of the Norfolk Broads. It is one of the more northerly broads close to the North Sea coast.
This picture-perfect broad is a very popular birding destination.
Here you can see marsh harriers flying overhead and in the winter months you might spot hen harriers and day-flying barn owls. There is also a permanent colony of cranes in the fields around here.
But most people are drawn to Horsey Mere because of Horsey Windpump, an iconic Norfolk landmark.
It is owned by the National Trust and you can climb to the top deck and look out over the Mere and fens.
Walking
One of out favourite short walks in the Broads starts at Horsey Windpump.
We always seem to visit Norfolk in wintertime and a walk along the Mere on a clear, crisp winter’s day is hard to beat.
This 5-mile walk will give you a taste of everything this area has to offer: reed beds, lake, river, farmland, marsh, beach, dunes, grey seals and the North Sea itself.
From Horsey Windpump a marked footpath will lead you through reed beds around the north side of the Mere.
At the end of Waxham New Cut stands the picturesque shell of the once-magnificent Brograve Mill.
The path then continuous eastwards to the coast road. From here, a track leads over dunes at Horsey Gap. In wintertime you can spot grey seals on the beach.
After a mile southward along the dunes, a path leads inland to reach the road at Crinkle Hill. The road will lead you back to the car park at Horsey Windpump.
Norfolk Coast Path
The Norfolk Coast Path runs from Hunstanton in west Norfolk round to Sea Palling on the north east Norfolk coast.
The majority of this walking trail runs through the dramatic landscape of the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
From Sea Palling you can walk towards Horsey Gap.
This 3-mile linear walk is good for bird watching and reptile spotting as well as offering far-reaching views inland and along the coast.
