Set in the heart of the High Weald AONB in East Sussex on the border of Kent, the famous Bodiam Castle has such a strong appeal!

If you would be asked to draw a castle you would probably draw the outline of this 14th century castle.

It has such a powerful outline: a square block with rounded corner turrets and a wide moat.

Over 250 years after it was built, Bodiam fell into neglect until restoration in 1826 by the MP John “Mad Jack” Fuller.

Today the castle is managed by the National Trust and you can visit the grounds.

Inside the castle walls it is a roofless ruin, but it has a wonderful atmosphere.

You can even climb the steep spiral staircases leading up to the battlements. A great family day out!

Walking

Combine a visit to the castle with a wonderful 5-mile walk around this historic site.

The Bodiam Castle walk starts at the National Trust car park and heads south towards Staplecross. You’ll return along the River Rother.

The nicest way to arrive at Bodiam is on a steam train from Tenterden, operated by the Kent & East Sussex Railway.

At Bodiam Station a 6-mile circular follows the River Rother and takes in the remains of the Abbey of Robertsbridge.

Or you could visit Bodiam Castle in the morning and then walk from Bodiam Station to Northiam Station.

In Northiam you must definitely visit Great Dixter House & Garden.

This 4-mile linear walk through the Sussex countryside is very rewarding.

Bedgebury National Pinetum & Forest

A couple of miles northeast of Bodiam you can explore Bedgebury Forest.

The National Pinetum is home to a world-leading collection of conifers and provides a beautiful setting for peaceful walks.

Bedgebury Forest has miles of family cycling and mountain-biking, walking, and running trails, and an adventure play trail. Great for kids!

On a warm summer’s day, we did the 5,5-mile Bedgebury Forest Trail.
