A half a mile south of Burwich, a pretty East Sussex village, lies Bateman’s.

The idyllic home of the writer Rudyard Kipling. He lived at Bateman’s from 1902 until his death in 1936.

Surrounded by the wooded landscape of the Sussex High Weald AONB, this 17th-century house provided Kipling the seclusion he much needed and it inspired his work.

The rooms and especially his book-lined study remain much as he left them, with letters, early editions of his work, oriental rugs and artefacts reflecting his strong association with the East.

What we just loved about Bateman’s is the fact that it truly feels like the Kiplings just stepped out for the day.

The gardens are all very well maintained, and they look stunning in summertime.

At the far end of the garden, across the stream, is a still working watermill, which was converted by Kipling to generate electricity.

Walking

The Bateman’s estate consists of 300 acres of beautiful High Weald Countryside.

This landscape is classically medieval; full of small fields, hedgerows, old trees, abandoned iron ore pits, hidden ponds and deserted trackways.

The River Dudwell runs through the valley and there are seemingly endless magnificent views.

You can follow three National Trust walks along the Bateman’s Estate and explore ‘Kipling Country’.

Or if you fancy a longer stretch then the 7-mile Burwash circular walk will take you through the stunning Sussex countryside near Bateman’s.

Another 9,5-mile circular walk explores Dudwell Valley and Burwash Weald.

You will see several of the celebrated follies built by the eccentric landowner “Mad Jack” Fuller as you pass south of the village of Brightling.
