Wistman’s Wood
Wistman’s Wood is one of only three remote high-altitude oakwood that once covered much of Dartmoor National Park in Devon.
From the Two Bridges Hotel, it is an easy 1,5 mile walk to Wistman’s Wood.
First you will see a barren hillside ahead and suddenly this enchanted fairyland appears.
The oaks grow barely taller than 5.5m (18ft) high. Their lichen covered, twisted and gnarled branches, and the uneven rocky floor make it impossible for Dartmoor ponies and cattle to enter.
This is the main reason why the wood still exists on the moor – its inaccessibility keeps it protected from destructive grazing.
Walking
We followed a higher trail north, climbed up Crockern Torn and headed for Longaford Tor.
On the summit of Longaford Tor, we enjoyed a windy panoramic view of Dartmoor.
Then we descended and entered the valley of Wistman’s Wood.
It felt like we just stepped into Tolkien’s LOTR. Such a mesmerising place!
Along the West Dart River, the path winds back to the car park of the Two Bridges Hotel. An exciting 5-mile circular walk!
If you have time and energy left, head for Princetown and continue walking.
Princetown Audio Walk
The Princetown audio walk is a 6-mile circular walk starting from the High Moorland Visitor Centre.
It takes you across moorland to a waterfall and an aqueduct, past Bronze Age settlements and stone rows and back along the hard track of the disused railway line to see remains of the granite quarries.
The audio walk is divided into tracks which you can then play when you reach each stopping point.
It includes Hart Tor and the Rifle Range, Black Tor Waterfall, Devonport Leat, and Ingra Tor Quarry.
