Wordsworth House & Garden
The famous Romantic poet William Wordsworth was born in this lovely Georgian townhouse, in the Cumbrian town of Cockermouth, 250 years ago.
This stately home has been faithfully restored by the National Trust. It has been furnished in mid 18-century style, with some of Wordsworth’s own personal effects.
Initially, we did not set out to visit Wordsworth’s birthplace. We just wanted to walk around Watch Hill. But our B&B host pointed out the significance of this place. So we chose to visit it prior to our walk.
We thoroughly enjoyed the gorgeous walled riverside garden.
Our own photo’s are a bit gloomy, so we decided to use the photo’s from the National Trust for this post.
Walking
A scenic 8-mile circular walk starts from Wordsworth House in Cockermouth. It will lead you through the beautiful countryside of the North Lakes. The route will take you up Watch Hill.
Watch Hill gently rises to the north east of Cockermouth and has panoramic valley views backed by dramatic mountain scenery.
The hill itself is a series of closely cropped pastures and the summit is merely an unmarked grassy knoll.
But don’t let that put you off! The panoramas towards the Vale of Lorton and the Buttermere fells are quite fabulous.
Much of the route follows the Allerdale Ramble. This 54-mile long distance path starts in the Lake District before striking out west for the Solway Firth coast.
