Hughenden Manor
Hughenden Manor was the home of one of Britain´s most influential prime ministers, Benjamin Disraeli.
Located in High Wycombe in the heart of the Chilterns AONB, Hughenden offers a colourful insight into the charismatic personality and colourful private life of this Victorian Prime Minister, who lived here from 1848 to 1881.
The house
The house contains an extraordinary collection of personal memorabilia in rooms on the ground and first floor.
We loved the replica portrait of Queen Victoria, who developed much affection for Disraeli and regularly send him gifts.
Many of these gifts are on display.
The exhibit in the basement of the house tells the story of Hughenden’s use during World War II as a top-secret mapping facility.
Hughenden was therefore high on Hitler’s hit list.
The garden
The formal garden has been recreated according to Mary Anne’s (Disraeli’s wife) designs.
The borders are very exuberant and colourful, and we especially enjoyed the walled kitchen garden.
While walking through the gardens, you will frequently catch a glimpse of Hughenden Valley, a beautiful rolling parkland that surround the manor house.
Walking
Hughenden Estate is run by the National Trust and there are several waymarked NT trails through the woodlands of the estate.
We enjoyed a 5,6-mile circular walk through Hughenden Valley which offered some great views of the house and the Buckinghamshire countryside.
Or you can explore the town of High Wycombe on foot.
A 5,5-mile circular starts at the Guildhall on the High Street and follows the River Wye downstream.
